ADVANCED PLACEMENT SUMMER WORKSHOPS

The American Institute for History Education is pleased to offer high-quality professional development for teachers of Advanced Placement courses. We will specialize in the social studies subjects. Our workshops are intended to help novice and experienced AP teachers. In addition, we encourage teachers of Honors classes to take advantage of this unique opportunity. The AP summer workshops will be held during the week of July 25–30, 2010, on the campus of Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J.

AIHE’s Social Studies Advanced Placement Summer Workshops have been endorsed by the Middle States Regional Office of the College Board.

Courses Offered

The following AP courses are available as workshops:

United States History This workshop is designed to prepare high school United States History teachers to teach this course in their high schools, to provide students with the analytical skills and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with the problems and materials in United States History, and to develop the skills necessary for arriving at conclusions on the basis of an informed judgment and the skills for presenting reasons and evidence clearly and persuasively in essay format. The teachers will also be introduced to the latest College Board changes to the test and scoring strategies.
European History This workshop is designed to prepare high school European History teachers to teach this course in their high schools and to develop (a) an understanding of some of the principle themes in modern European History, (b) an ability to analyze historical evidence, and (c) an ability to analyze and to express historical understanding in writing. The teachers will also be introduced to the latest College Board changes to the test and scoring strategies.
World History This workshop is designed to prepare high school teachers of World History to teach this course in their high schools, and to provide the students with the necessary background knowledge, analytical skills, and critical writing skills to be successful when taking the Advanced Placement test. Emphasis on the non European world and the interactions that occurred are highlighted in this course. The teachers will also be introduced to the latest College Board changes to the test and scoring strategies.
Psychology This workshop is designed to prepare high school teachers to develop a curriculum that will prepare their students to take the Advanced Placement Psychology test and to introduce students to the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings and other animals. The teachers will also be introduced to the latest College Board changes to the test and scoring strategies.
United States Government and Politics This workshop is designed to prepare high school US Government and Politics teachers to teach this course in their high schools, to develop pedagogical methods and techniques for teaching specific skills, and to provide the high school student with a learning experience equivalent to that obtained in college introductory U.S. Government and Politics courses. The teachers will also be introduced to the latest College Board changes to the test and scoring strategies.

All teachers will receive a certificate for 30 hours of College Board approved instruction. In addition, all New Jersey teachers will receive 30 professional development hours from the American Institute for History Education as a state-approved vendor.

All instructors are certified by the College Board and also serve as Readers for the AP Test in their subject area.

Upon registration to the Workshop, Rowan University will provide an information packet and questionnaire to be completed and mailed back to Rowan.

Check-In

Onsite check-in will be held at Rowan University from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 25, 2010.

Orientation Dinner

An orientation meeting and dinner will be held on Sunday, July 25, at 6 p.m.

Class Schedule

Monday July 26 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Tuesday July 27 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Wednesday July 28 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Thursday July 29 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Friday July 30 8 a.m. to NOON

Tuition Options

Resident Participant $1,295 This includes all housing and meals (Sunday night dinner, three meals for each full day and breakfast and lunch on Friday). All meals will be served at the Student Center dining hall. Housing includes a suite style accommodation - private bedroom and shared bath with one other person.
Commuting Participant $895 This includes continental breakfast and lunch each day along with a daily parking permit.

Both options include all resources, including any handouts, books and pamphlets, provided by the instructor or the College Board.

Attendance Requirement

Participants must attend the entire Workshop, from Monday through Friday, in order to earn a certificate and 30 professional development hours.
