Experts: Barnum about more than showbiz

Like most Bridgeporters, Yohuru Williams grew up surrounded by the name P.T. Barnum.

Indeed, the name of the one-time Bridgeport mayor and circus impresario is seemingly everywhere in the city -- Barnum Avenue, the Barnum Museum, P.T. Barnum Apartments, etc. But, given the ubiquity of his moniker, Barnum remained something of a mystery to Williams, who knew him primarily as a slick entertainer and promoter.

“When you think about P.T. Barnum, he still kind of comes off as a slimy showman,” said Williams, also vice president for history education at the American Institute for History Education in Swedesboro, N.J. “He has this rogue element about him.”

Yet, upon doing research on Barnum for an upcoming book on teaching history, Williams discovered another, seldom discussed aspect to Barnum’s personality: that of a passionate advocate for civil rights and against slavery.

Teaching History Sixties Style at Temple University
[Excerpt] ...That was the beginning. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from that point on, the students stayed for 30, 60, sometimes even 90 minutes after class, discussing present-day examples of whatever topic we had been examining in class. After a couple of weeks I suggested that if they agreed we could open up the Friday post-class discussion and invite anyone who was interested to come and join us in discussing the historical background of contemporary issues. And I suggested that we call them "teach-ins" (as a child of the 1960s, I couldn't help it).

Dr. Yohuru Williams Discusses Massachusetts Senate Election Impact

Dr. Yohuru Williams to discuss impact of the Massachusetts Senate Election on President Obama’s legislative agenda on The Talk of Chicago WVON 1690am this evening at 5:30pm Central Time.

Noted Civil Rights and African American history author Dr. Yohuru Williams will offer commentary regarding the impact of the outcome of this evening’s special election in Massachusetts on President Obama’s legislative agenda, most notably including possibilities surrounding the President’s healthcare goals.

Dr. Williams is Vice President for History Education with the American Institute for History Education (AIHE). A prolific author and commentator, Dr. Williams is considered to be an expert in Civil Rights and Black Power Movements, 19th and 20th century US education history, and African American history. He is a professor of history at Fairfield University and oversees AIHE’s CODiE Award-winning online teacher resources CiceroHistory.com and SojournerHistory.com.

Dr. Williams has authored, co-authored, edited or co-edited a number of academic and historical works, including Liberated Territory, Toward a Local History of the Black Panther Party (with Jama Lazerow); Teaching US History Beyond the Textbook: Six Investigative Strategies, Grades 5-12; and Black Politics, White Power, Civil Rights, Black Power and the Black Panthers in New Haven.

Third Annual Mount Vernon History Teacher of the Year Award Won by Jim Percoco
The third annual Mount Vernon History Teacher of the Year award was won on July 22 by James Percoco, a history teacher at West Springfield HSchool. Percoco, who created the nationally recognized Applied History course at West Springfield HS, was awarded $5,000 and an all-expenses-paid field trip to Mount Vernon for his students at West Springfield HS.
